OPERATION MOCKINGBIRD was a U.S. intelligence program created to spread CIA propaganda through the media. Hundreds of millions of dollars each year went to paying off influencers in printed news, TV, and radio in order to ensure they told the American people exactly what the CIA wanted them to hear—and nothing they didn't.
The CIA flatly denied this program existed until it was uncovered in Senate hearings in the mid-1970s. The CIA claims to have discontinued the program in 1976, yet there is plenty of evidence that the techniques developed and used under Operation Mockingbird continue to be common practice.
