A recent research paper entitled "Masks, false safety and real dangers, Part 1: Friable mask particulate and lung vulnerability" concludes, "If widespread masking continues, then the potential for inhaling mask fibers and environmental and biological debris continues on a daily basis for hundreds of millions of people. This should be alarming for physicians and epidemiologists knowledgeable in occupational hazards". This research suggests that, in addition to causing hypoxia and hypercapnia (oxygen deprivation and excessive CO2 levels in the blood), and risk of infection from long term wearing, there is another danger - the inhalation of particles and fibres contained in the mask which may become lodged in the deep lung tissue and cause a variety of lung problems , including pulmonary fibrosis.
